Atentiv Inc. Featured as Top Company to Watch in 2013/2014 in SharpBrains’ Digital
Brain Health Market Report
Recently published study shows an application of the Atentiv™ System is a potential new treatment for ADHD in children.
Cambridge, Mass. [December 5, 2012] – Today, Atentiv Inc. announced that it has been named one of the Top 10 Companies to Watch in 2013/2014 by an independent market research firm, SharpBrains, Inc. Atentiv’s proprietary technology platform– the Atentiv System™ – utilizes noninvasive, electroencephalography (EEG) and a direct brain-to-computer wireless connection that enables simple and practical training of new attention skills. A recently published study in PLOS ONE* reported significant improvement in children’s inattentive and hyperactive – impulsive symptoms. The results suggest the technology is a novel potential treatment option for children suffering from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
The State of the Digital Brain Health Market 2012-2020 – Transforming Health with Digital Tools to Assess, Monitor, and Enhance Cognition across the Lifespan is a biennial report offering insights into the rapidly evolving brain health markets, and features detailed trend analysis and growth projections. Atentiv was selected as one of the Top 10 Companies to Watch in 2013/2014 following SharpBrains’ in-depth analyses of more than 200 companies in the
marketplace.
“We believe we are on the verge of a seismic transformation in the field of behavioral disorders and brain science,” noted Eric Gordon, founder, CEO and president of Atentiv, Inc. “We expect to launch the first of several applications of the Atentiv™ System commercially within the next year. Clinical studies are now underway at three prominent centers specializing in ADHD in the U.S. and Singapore.”
The company recently closed a private equity financing, enabling the company to advance product applications toward market launch in 2013. The core technology of the Atentiv™ System was developed by researchers at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) in Singapore and Duke National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School. Atentiv signed an agreement with Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), the marketing and commercialization arm of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), to license the technology.
Further research collaborations to continue product and school room development have also been executed with I2R and the Singapore Institute of Mental Health.
About the Atentiv™ System Data
The Atentiv™ System is a novel, non pharmaceutical, digital cognitive therapy platform that delivers sustained and measurable improvements in attention control for individuals. The system leverages a proprietary, non-invasive direct brain-to-computer interface to measure a user’s unique ‘cognitive signature’. Initial product applications are designed to optimize attention skills in elementary and high school children. Other customized applications in development include memory, reasoning, multitasking and for such disorders as Alzheimer’s disease.
A recently published study in the Journal PLOS ONE showed the technology represents a novel treatment for attention disorders. The single arm, open-label study enrolled 20 children ages eight to twelve who had not received stimulant medication and satisfied the criteria for the diagnosis of ADHD. The study participants then utilized the Atentiv System™ for an intervention program, which consisted of 3 training sessions weekly for eight weeks, followed by a once monthly training session for three months. Results were measured by parent rated ADHD-RS scores and EEG data.
After the 8 weeks of training sessions both parent-rated inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms on the ADHD Rating Scale showed significant improvement. At week 8 of the training schedule, the mean improvement was –4.6 and –4.7, respectively, for inattentive symptoms and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms (both P<.01). Additionally, the study showed a statistically significant predictor of benefit respective to the child’s ADHD rating score at baseline and at week eight. Thus, a higher score on the ADHD-RS at base line predicted greater improvement at week eight. The training intervention was found to be well tolerated with the main side effect to be mild headache.
